All, below are some of my thoughts below:

I desire driving in the states, desperately

Wide roads

Most of the roads are 7 or 8 lines, one way.

And can you imagine? Darci, our marketing girl in Irvine office, she took care of us every day, picked up from hotel to the office, and from restaurant, office or supermarket back to the hotel.

She scared us one morning, when she said it would be better if there’re few more lines, one way. Eku, our Japanese marketing girl strongly invited her to come to Japan in March. I assumed that her invitation was for watching cherry blossom. However, she told us, slowly, since April is the month for Japanese government setting their budget, so, many roads are under the construction in March to clean up the budget.

At that time, in Tokyo, the most of the cases would be 2 lines one way, might possibly become 1 line one way, or even 1 line for two ways.

I forgot whether I told Darci that I suffered 1 and a half hour to go to the office for 24.5 km every morning, and I had to leave around 2 hours to come to the office on 09:00 sharp and around 1 hour to be back to home.

Wonderful view along the roads

From my limited time in US, besides of the wide road, you would enjoy nature scenes very much wherever you go; green, mountains, sometimes, 3 different layers mountains, Gobi, they might not that much beautiful, but driving along the ever - changing scenes like those is also so wonderful.

My girlfriend told me that whenever she felt bad, she would like to drive, aimless, and she would feel much better, afterwards.

Btw, from San Francisco to 17 - mile drive, it should be S17, which impressed me very much, couldn’t help making me feeling we were driving in the forest.

Clear map guide for driving

I like driving very much, but I lack basic sense of direction.

When I told Korean and Japanese marketing girls that I would like to drive next time I come to the states.

They both laughed at me heavily, and Japanese girl even would like to know my blood type to figure out my mixed characteristics.

Because I was lost when I was sending they both back from XinTianDi to the hotel last July when they were in Shanghai.

Finally, Japanese girl looked at the map in my car, but I just don’t believe what she told me, and it proved I was wrong, unfortunately.

I don’t know how to drive even in Shanghai, too many wounded small roads making me headache. But I would like to try to drive in the states one day, should be very fantastic experience, but I need one sitting beside me, to look at the guide printed from Mapquest for sure.

Road Sign

In US, I don’t know why, there’re signs like

1/4 miles away,

1 and 3/4 miles away

2 and 3/5 miles away,

instead of

1/4 miles away,

1 miles away,

2 miles away,

Sign for Pedestrian

I was stuck when I would like to walk around a little bit at beginning

There’s a palm in silver, instead of green.

Good manner

When my girlfriend and I would like to turn right, we are waiting and waiting till the people drive in direct line passed away first.

I’m a little puzzled at beginning, for even we turned right, there should be the enough distance for 10 more cars to turn right, then the car in direct line would come to that point;  but my girlfriend insist to wait, even the last night we were together and she is hurry to the airport to catch up last night to be back.

And it looks like most of the people are do like my girlfriend

Cheaper parking

Can you have a guess for parking near Hollywood, near Sunset blvd?

5 US$ for a full day??! Not a underground parking place though, gracious and easy enough to park, and it is only 1 US$ for one hour in Santa Monica.

And let’s have a look in Shanghai, 15 RMB, around 1.875 US$ per hour parking on the ground, near our office in Shanghai; and 30 RMB, 3.75 US$ per hour, park in HuaiHai Road, according to what my girlfriend told me.

btw, till the end of Aug. 15th, 2006, I parked at the restaurant, named “Duck King”, 30 RMB, around 3.75 US$ per day, from 09:00 – 18:00, if I left around 19:00, they would charge me additional 5 RMB, but I park on the Pedestrian road, with flooding people and bicycles, endless. Luckily, they would guide me to drive up and down, left and right…but still so inconvenient.

Cheaper Gasoline Fee

In Shanghai, 97# gasoline, 5.21 RMB per liter, around 19.72 RMB for one gallon, which is around 2.47 US$ for one gallon.

but considering of our various additional cost for the cars, it is so so expensive here

road maintaining fee, 1200 RMB per year for the small cars, around US$ 150

transportation fee, 1800 RMB per year for the small cars, around US$ 225

and sure, we can’t forget our bidding fee for the planet number for the car,

Aug, 2006, average bidding fee is 40459 RMB, which is around US$ 5057.38.

different standards

it is so difficult for me to be used to their standards at the beginning

like, miles instead of meters

pounds instead of kilo

gallon instead of kilo liter

Shopping

Credit card Signature

At beginning, I did not realize I should take the passport with me, for the cashier would request me to show the passport so that they could recognize I’m the owner of the card.

You just sign on credit card machine by the electronic pen, no need any passwords like what we request here.

Cheaper shopping

When I came to Paris, the first stop in Europe, it was so difficult for me to enjoy myself much, for I times 9 for everything, like 1 Euro = 9 RMB.

I changed my perspective of the money in other countries gradually after more outbound trips.

So, I took 1 US$ = 1 RMB, but what makes me angry is that even I times 8, I still feel it is cheaper for some items.

Multivitamin is definitely for sure, but the others, like garment, I bought a little bit clothes, I just can’t believe they were all made in China, but why it is cheaper than we buy in China

I also bought 2 different bags, planning to be one for my mother and another for mother in law, but finally, I would like to have one for my own.

Shoes, it is pity I did not be able to any shoes for either no my size or I feel tortured, but the 3 pair of shoes I like are all inexpensive, especially the first one I fond of. It is sold from 210 US$ to 54 US$, plus 8.5% tax, but I don’t think I could buy it in Shanghai that much cheap with the design like that.

My girlfriend shared with me that it might possibly for following reasons:

With global outsourcing, companies are actually getting cheaper merchandises in Asia, South America, you get lower cost, so you sell at lower price to gain business. Shipping large vessel via ocean add very little additional cost to the merchandise. Plus more efficient distribution management in the US, so the cost of certain merchandises in the customers’ hands is really not very different than those in the hands of Chinese customers.

Even if produce domestically, the automatic assembly lines make the manufacturing costs little difference between the two country.

However, I also have noticed that

when we are queuing for adding the fuel, there’re 3 cars, the owners are cleaning the car by themselves, which is not that normal here.

My girlfriend also shared with me that the labor costs are much higher in US, middle class people in the states can hardly afford to hire a long-term housekeeper, not like in Shanghai.

T shirt

It looks like most of the restaurants, bars are keen on their brand

No matter the sea food restaurant, bar, wine shops, they are selling T-shirts with their logo, images. Even the peddler along the road when we were heading to Yosemite who are selling fresh berries, palms, and they are also selling their own T – shirt, clothe bags, with their logo.

Funny Shopping

I bought one T –shirt, which wrote

“the perfect Gataway -- Alcatraz triathlon training camp”

“Dig, dash, dive”

I also bought another interesting frig magnetic

“Housework is evil. It must be stopped”

One more is the hen and egg are discussing who came first.

I envy people who can pencil sketch, maybe, I should consider to learn sometimes when I do not work any more, so that I would sketch them to add more fun to the article.

interesting tea bag

I don’t know how to explain in a clearer way, when you peel off the cover, the transparent plastic one, the paper bag inside is long and thin, instead of the small square one, and it is full of small holes, so, what you need is only to put it into the water, agitate it and tea would be melted into the water.

Cart

In the parking, there’re carts putting place so that you could just put cart to it directly, to avoid to make the parking place a lot of mess

Nice People

On July. 16th, we punctured for some unexpected reasons, and 2, 3 passersby helped us to move the car to road side. You know, it is around 15:00, in the hot summer in California! But sure, this is always the world full of balance. Some of the others laughed at us heavily and without any concealing.

The other night, we went to one sea food restaurant, and it is so considerate of the lady to pass the chopsticks to us, the girls from Korea, Japan and me.

In the shoe shop, the lady who also went to the shop, told me instantly when she saw me standing, “this is the most beautiful shoes I saw today, not only in this shop.” When I told her I struggled for it giving me much pressure for the crossbedding at the top with that much high heel. “Oh, don’t buy it though it looks so nice”

Cheaper entrance fee

A car with people, costing only 20 US$ for Yosemite, and 8.75 US$ for the entrance fee for 17 – mile drive.

I searched the website, and here is the entrance fee for Huang Mountain for one person

Peak:                                 200 RMB, around US$ 25

Off peak:                            130 RMB, around US$ 16.25

Cable car:

Peak:                                 65 RMB, around US$ 8.125, single way, not round trip

off peak:                                   55 RMB, around US$ 6.875, single way, not round trip

I also list some other sights which entrance fee are excluded to Huang Moutain’s entrance fee

emerald valley:                  42 RMB, around US$ 5.25

wild monkeys’ valley:          30 RMB, around US$ 3.75

nine dragon waterfall:        25 RMB, around US$ 3.125

empire source                    25 RMB, around US$ 3.125

phoenix source                  25 RMB, around US$ 3.125

my girlfriend told me there’s one report comparing of the living standard, cost in 1996 till 2006, there is really few changes; and let’s think of ours, we do have higher salary comparing with 10 years ago, but obviously, it can’t catch up with fast increasing cost, especially the soaring apartments’ fee…

what the poor “working poorers” we are!

Impressing hotel in Santa Monica

I’m very surprised to find out a significant sign at the reception desk, “We reserve the rights not to serve anybody”

It also reminds me of the story that Jiyoun, our beautiful, young looking Korean marketing girl went to the bar, and the people refused to sell her alcohol, for she looks younger than 21.

BTW, I’m also very happy to experience the self service elevator. At the beginning, I don’t know how to step into the one when it arrived, for you had to open the door outside, and then, step into the elevator inside. very old one, in one moment, wondering whether I’m back to the old times in the old movies…

FengShui

We went to one Mexican restaurant one night, and there’re a pair of jars with pumping water keep constantly flowing at the entrance of restaurant, they would like to bring more business by  Fengshui, right?

Our office

Water machine

It is different with most of ours, there’s one button in blue for cold water, and there’re two buttons in red for hot.

“you should press two red buttons together for hot water to avoid the possible hurt”

office notice

Emergency contact number

Ambulance:                               911

Hospital:                                    753 200

Physician      :                           582 5430

       Alternate:                           788 0960

Police:                                       911

Sexual Harassment Is Illegal, one page is in English and there’s one more page in Espanol??!!

Another notice named

Harassment or disclamation in employment is prohibited by law.  Two full pages

California “No Smoking” law

California “Voting Notice”

Whiteboard

There’re two walls, you could not feel the difference with the others, only you could write and erase on them, just like the whiteboards. And one of them in the corridor, around 3m x 5m,  could you imagine, it is written in full, so, people have to figure out hardly where to fill in more texts sometimes

Another one is in the meeting room, also huge.

Air conditioner

The air conditioner in our office is not always on, it is on for around 15 minutes and then off for 5 minutes and then, on again.

A very good way to save power, and to make the people in the office feel comfortable.

laughing Darci

Darci is taking care of all of our arrangements, and so nice of her to pick up us from the hotel to the office, and sending us back from the office to hotel.

She surprised me the first morning, for she always look very happy, laughed loudly, no matter for what matters.

you know, most of us, the oriental people are a little bit shy and don't express our feelings, joy in front of the people.

sitting on Darci’s car is really the wonderful experience, her laughing would make you couldn’t help feeling happy as well, making you relaxed, I would always remember those memories.

chaotic LAX airport

I fly from Shanghai to San Francisco by UA 858, then, transfer to Lox angles, but I have to take my luggage out, to do the customs check; then, UA 858 again, from San Francisco to LAX.

when around 10:30, i went to the gate of 85 as what the screen displayed, the check in people  told me to wait for more minutes, the current check in flight is the delayed earlier flight. They would announce when it is our flight.

then, wait and wait, finally, I couldn't help to asking them again, they told me the gate moved to 86 instead of 85.

when I came to 86, they told me it should be 82, and 82 told me should be 86 for all of the standing by for UA 858.

Eventually, I came to customer service center for help and they told me UA 858 flied few minutes ago.

i have to wait till next flight, which is UA 886.

At the flight, I saw many familiar faces, they should be the one to fly the same flight with me from UA 858 from Shanghai to Log angles.

So far, I’m still blind what happened actually, for no any announcement, no one called my name, and my luggage is UA 858.

Sb said the UA 858 from San Francisco to LAX is overbooked, so, so many standing by.

i don't know…

Lucky Cookies Notes

“good things come to those who wait. Be patient”

14 19 29 30 44 18, (20, 24)

“you could choose to forgive anything”

7 12 21 38 47. 22

“bread today is better than cake tomorrow”

19, 24, 38, 45, 11, 7

for me;

for me, now;

those mean something…(except I don’t that much agree with the last one)

Cheers, Joyce
